The gold embroidery is stitched into the cloth on both ends, never a patch or a print. The cloth is backed in satin, and each end finishes in 2 inches of gold fringe. 104 inches end to end: 52 a side, 3 inches wide at the neck and 4.5 at the ends.

The embroidery is stitched on the stole itself, not a patch.

Prefer something simpler? The black simple cross stole, one gold cross on each end, is $29.99.

What it means

The dove and the olive branch recall Noah's dove, which came back with an olive leaf when the waters had gone down (Genesis 8:11): hope after loss. Beneath the cross they say what a funeral says, that death does not have the last word.

A gold Latin cross, a white dove and an olive branch.

When it is worn

Black is the colour of mourning. The Roman Missal allows it, where it is the practice, in Masses for the Dead, and it is the traditional colour of All Souls. Anglican funerals may use it, and Missouri Synod Lutherans wear it on Good Friday and, as an alternative to violet, on Ash Wednesday.
